Horses had been running wild in the Americas for thousands of years, until they went extinct. Modern horses, as we know them, came to America in around 1519 AD with the Spanish settlers led by Hernán Cortéz.
Over time, some developed into the domesticated (驯养的) horse. However, America has preserved many of these wild horses that came from their Spanish ancestors (祖先). There has been debate about the future of wild horse populations in America. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) says that there are about 33,780 wild horses throughout 10 states in the western part of the U.S.
These wild horses have no natural enemies and are under federal protection, so their population size can double every four years. This does lead to problems. For many years, wild horses that came too close to cattle or sheep on public grazing lands (牧场) were caught or killed. Then a national campaign encouraged states and the federal government to protect the animals as a symbol of the American West. In 1971, a law was passed to allow only agents of the BLM to gather the horses as part of their work in preserving federal lands.
Most people (scientists included) believe that wild horse populations need to become a lot smaller. The BLM, which keeps track of wild horses, suggests that we have about 14,000 more horses than can exist in balance with the ecosystems that they live in. This causes a huge problem that has to be dealt with both environmentally and politically. A solution needs to be found not only to preserve the species but to also keep its population under control. And then, politically this needs to be done in some way.
Some things have already been done to try to get the number of wild horses down, which include adoption of wild horses and the practice of giving vaccines (疫苗) to the female horses to make them unable to reproduce.

Who built St. Basil's Cathedral? When did Big Ben start ticking? And what was Stone-henge used for? Here are some interesting facts about famous landmarks.
●The Golden Gate Bridge
During the 50th anniversary celebrations for the Golden Gate Bridge, so many people walked across it that the middle of the bridge sank over two metres. The bridge designed by Irving Morrow, which was opened in 1937, is actually red, but is called " golden" because gold was discovered in California.
●La Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia is a church in Barcelona which was designed by artist Antoni Gaudi. Construction began in 1882, but over 100 years later, it still isn't finished. The building is being financed by donations.
●Stonehenge
Experts are fairly certain that Stonehenge was built around 4, 000 years ago. However, nobody knows what it was used for. Some believe it was a burial ground. Others think it was built to study astronomy, and some are under the impression that it was used as a place to cure sick people.
●Big Ben
Big Ben, which is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, is the nickname for the Great Bell in the famous clock. The Great Bell, which began functioning in 1859, rings every hour. There are people whose job is to place coins on the pendulum to correct the weight and keep the clock on lime.
●St. Basil's Cathedral
Construction of St Basil's cathedral, a Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow, was completed in 1561 by the first Czar of Russia-Ivan the Terrible. The building, which was designed by Barma and Postnik Yakovlev, is now a museum.

In America, Virginia Beach has all the elements of a classic seaside resort: brilliant beaches, a lively boardwalk, plenty of restaurants and nightspots, and amusement rides sure to appeal to kids. Many believe Virginia Beach is at its best in the offseason, when the town is less crowded but the weather is still mild.
Meanwhile, some safety tips should be followed, enjoying the happiness and excitement the beach offers.
The number 1 safety tip concerns ocean safety: pay attention to Flag conditions posted on the lifeguard stands. Lifeguards post a red flag to warn when the ocean water is dangerous. Take them seriously! Tourists from landlocked regions are particularly easily attracted by the magic of the waves. However, a calm ocean can become risky without warning. Make sure you swim near a lifeguard. Swimming without lifeguard protection is almost five times as great as drowning at a beach with lifeguards.
Never swim alone. Many drownings involve single swimmer. When you swim with someone else, if one of you has a problem, the other may be able to get help, including signaling for assistance from others.
Don’t fight the current. The facts show that some 80% of rescues by lifeguards at ocean beaches are caused by currents. These currents are formed by surf and gravity, because once surf pushes water up the slope of a beach, gravity pulls it back. This can create concentrated rivers of water moving offshore. If you are caught in a rip current, don’t fight it by trying to swim directly to shore. Instead, swim parallel to shore until you feel the current relax, then swim to shore. Most rip currents are narrow and a short swim parallel to shore will help bring you to safety.

Fireworks are used to celebrate the New Year around the world.
In China, fireworks are used to drive away evil. Right after midnight on New Year' s Eve, fireworks are set off. It is believed that the person who launches the first firework of the New Year will have good luck.
Dubai is hosting a fireworks display from Burj Khalifa, the world' s tallest building. The event will also be live-broadcast on MyDubaiNewYear. com, offering visitors the choice between three camera angles. Fireworks by Grucci will feature a spectacular display at Atlantis, the Palm Hotel and Resort in Dubai. The company plans to spell "Atlantis" in the sky with fireworks. It will use the reflections of the fireworks in the water to enhance(增强) the display. One of their ideas is to create a shining red carpet, which will light up the sky as well as reflect in the water below.
Berlin is celebrating the New Year with a festive open-air party at the Brandenburg Gate. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend. There will be an international program of live music, light and laser shows, and plenty of food and drink. The spectacular fireworks display starts at midnight on the dot.
Finally, more than a million revelers (狂欢者) are expected at Times Square in New York on New Year' s Eve. They will take part in the 109-year-old tradition of watching the iconic ball drop from atop One Times Square. The famous ball is about 4 meters in diameter, or 12-feet wide, and weighs close to 5,443 kilograms, or 12,000 pounds. It shines because it is covered in 2,688 Waterford crystals (水晶). At midnight, revelers will watch the sky above New York City ablaze (发光) with fireworks.
Some cities will not be celebrating the New Year with fireworks. Belgium cancelled its traditional fireworks display in central Brussels due to fears of the continuing terror threats.

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only turn to their friends for advice.
It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a circle of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.题型:阅读理解 题类:月考试卷 难易度:易

Modern life is impossible without travelling. The fastest way to travel is by air. With a modern plane you can travel in one day to places which took a month or more one hundred years ago.
Travelling by train is slower than by air, but it has its advantages. You can see the country you are travelling in. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They make even the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by sea when it is possible. There are large liners and river boats with which you can visit many other countries and different places. Travelling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty miles a day, just as you like .You can stop wherever you wish: where there is something interesting to see, at a good restaurant where you c an enjoy a good meal, or a hotel to spend the night. That is why travelling by car is popular for pleasure trips, while people usually take a train or a plane when they are travelling on business.

A student was one day taking a walk with his teacher. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer’s, who was working in the nearby field.
The student turned to the teacher, saying: “we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do.”
“My young friend,” answered the teacher, “we should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch?” The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.
After putting on his coat, he put his foot into one of his shoes, and felt something hard. Then he bent (弯腰) down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Surprised, he looked at the coin, turned it around and looked at it again. He then looked around, but no person was seen. He put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe. His surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.
He couldn’t control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. He said the help would save them from dying.
The student stood there deeply moved, and his eyes filled with tears. “Now,” said the teacher, “are you not much happier than if you had hidden the shoes?”

We don’t know how different our future will be in the year 2050. We can only try to imagine it.
At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet—even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today—we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
Spending holiday will also be completely different. Travelling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather sanguine about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
